rabbit
I am a rabbit.
Thundering heart and silent feet.
Ragged stench of broken grass underfoot
tearing breath in burning lungfuls.
I am sharp with fear, fully amplified
Thudding bright and narrow
focus and speed, the beam
of the moon filling wells of eyes.
I am driven, pursued
by maddening lust,
salivating long jaws grinning.
I duck and cover
turn into hiding
a sidelong burrow and
for many moonlit minutes
study the face of the beast.
The beast now still
seeking me, smelling for me,
rooting.
The shape, the eyes,
the thrust of this
almost companion.
The body tenses as my defenses
are penetrated,
I am perceived and pursued once again
